Brief History
Heritage Village was founded July 1976 and incorporated September 20, 1985. The
property located at 219 20 Street NE, East Grand Forks was purchased in 1994
from the Area Vocational Technical Institute; now the Northland Community &
Technical College. Over time historical buildings have been moved onto the
Heritage Village property including the Granville church, a school house, a town
hall, Sherlock house, a general store, a blacksmith shop, a saw mill and a barn.
Heritage Village volunteers restored the buildings to the 1800’s era. Volunteers
erected 3 additional buildings the Maury, Beier, and Hagen buildings to house
the antique equipment that they restore. Heritage Village has partnered with
regional wood carvers to promote the craft. The wood carvers group is hosted by
Heritage Village. They meet weekly and share their craft at all public events.
Heritage Village has also partnered with the Northern Lights Model Railroad
Association. Together they have restored railroad equipment to educate the
public on both history and railroad safety. The Northern Lights Model Railroad
Association has a ‘depot’ of model trains that is open to the public every
Saturday. Heritage Village hosts youth organizations for events. Both the Girl
Scouts and the Boy Scouts hold annual events at the Heritage Village. The local
4-H group meets at the barn, tends a heritage garden each summer and has a
petting zoo for Heritage Days. Heritage Village has 2 annual events; Heritage
Days the third week of August and the Christmas Festival the first week of
December. They have an annual fund raiser called ‘Fun’d Night’ in April.
Heritage Village partnered with the Dakota Science Center in 2006 to bring
environmental education to the community. Each year the water festival is held
at Heritage Village. The additional classroom is being built to meet the
Heritage Village strategic plan of increasing its’ ability to provide outreach
education to the community. Used for grants
